Dawes Milk Race
The story behind this beautiful bike:
"Dear Greenwich Cycle Workshop, I just want to say a massive thank you for restoring my Dawes Milk Race bike, which was a surprise birthday present from my partner and children. Just a little history as to the importance of this bike, in 1988, at the age of ten, I entered a spot the difference competition in the Greenwich Mercury Newspaper. to my amazement, having never won anything before, I won first prize which was the original Milk Race bike. The prize was worthy of a short feature in the paper and I remember the day when the photographer came round the house and presented the bike, and me not being able to to get on it. Anyway I soon grew into it and rode it until mountain bikes came in to fashion and thinking the racer with its thin wheels was uncool it was retired to my mum's shed only to see the light of day earlier this year when my partner asked to see it after I showed him the paper cutting from all those years ago. My partner played a trick on me and took the bike to Greenwich Cycle Workshop to return without the bike saying it was unrepairable and they gave him £25 scrap value, which he put towards the repair of his bike!! I was fuming and upset at the thought of losing the bike. So yesterday was a fantastic birthday surprise to be reunited with my bike again. Thank you Greenwich Cycle Workshop, the bike is like new. The frame and forks were sandblasted, painted and then adorned with the original replica stickers. Then it was taken back to Greenwich Cycle Workshop where the original parts were cleaned and serviced or sourced." It was a pleasure to work on the bike and a belated happy birthday!
